Renault’s lead driver Robert Kubica looks certain to miss the opening races of 2011 after sustaining injuries in a crash on the Ronde di Andora rally on Sunday morning.

Firm details remain thin on the ground for the moment, with initial news suggesting the Polish driver clipped a wall in his Skoda Fabia before hitting a crash barrier.  He is thought to have been trapped inside the car for an hour, with reports indicating the end of the crash barrier may have penetrated the Skoda.  Kubica’s co-driver Jakub Gerber was unharmed.

In a statement issued earlier today, Renault confirmed that Kubica was being operated on at the Santa Corona Hospital for multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand.  A more detailed update on his condition is expected from the hospital shortly.

Speculation on his likely replacement is already rife – reserve driver Bruno Senna makes a huge amount of sense for reasons we’ll cover later – but it seems more appropriate to concentrate on Robert’s condition for the time being.  We wish him well.
